Concept Retail Store

Client: Widely known as the iconoclastic voice that defied cultural norms, Vivienne Westwood is eponymous with the anti-capitalist roots of the punk movement that erupted in the late 70’s in England. A huge advocate for sustainability, Westwood holds a strong ethos that encourages patrons to shop thoughtfully.

Brief: Design a new and innovative concept store for Vivienne Westwood, which is soon to open in Paddington, Sydney NSW. It should consider the Westwood ethos, and offer an alternative and immersive customer experience.

Conceptual Approach: To subvert traditional ideas of shopping and broader notions of consumerism through an obstructed user experience. Although situated within a conventional retail space, the store will not merchandise the product to engage customers; rather, it will utilise symbolism to honour Westwood’s legacy and her broader stance on social issues - in particular, the effect of over-consumption on the environment. In response to this concept, modular joinery will offer an opportunity to transform the space, hosting monthly artist-in-residences with an adjoining opening night.
