Sydney Festival Pop-Up Store

Client: Sydney Festival is an annual event celebrating the country’s diverse storytellers. Performances range from theatre, music, and dance, with various workshops offered to the public.

Brief: Design a temporary pop-up for the Sydney Festival, which explores new ways of engaging with the public. It is imperative the design considers sustainability, and incorporates materials that can be repurposed following the end of the event. The pop-up will be housed inside Carriageworks, an industrial events space located in Eveleigh, Sydney NSW.

Conceptual Approach: Taking inspiration from the multi-media “structuralist” artist Do Ho Suh, my design reinterprets notions of home and belonging, and how this understanding is a constant evolution as one moves through life. Better understood through the process of metamorphosis, the pop-up represents a cocoon, where patrons are invited to come in and borrow a book from the library, or participate in a group discussion. Learning, evolving, and growing lead the user-experience, offering people the opportunity to leave with a developed sense of self.
